Baccarat
Having first been invented in Italy before making its way to France purely on the strength of its popularity, Baccarat became wildly popular in the 15th Century, winning over many fans. The actual meaning of the word Baccarat is strange for a game of its type because it actually refers to the hand of lowest worth in the game. This particular game has two primary flavors, Punto Banco and Chermin de Fer, but there is also a version called Baccarat Banque which is not as popular. Punto Banco is the most popular version and is played in casinos around the world as a game of chance that is loved by many. Chermin de Fer is most popular in France and related countries and uses an element of skill in its play. In Australia, Canada and the United States, it is Punto Banco that is played and the game is wildly popular as a high stakes gamble, often having a specific room set aside for it in most casinos. There are three primary outcomes that are possible in Baccarat: Player, Banker and, of course, Tie. Those playing are able to bet on either the Banker or the Player hands and depending upon the outcome of these hands, the winner is selected.
Card values are the primary component of determining a winner in Baccarat. An Ace is worth a single point; Kings, Queens, Jacks and 10’s are worth nothing; and all other numbered cards are worth their face value. By adding the values of the cards in a hand, a score is tallied up and once the total value of a hand is more than 10 points, the tens place is removed to give the total score. That boils down to a 16 being worth 6 or an 11 being worth 1 point. Thus, the highest possible score in a hand of Baccarat is 9 and the lowest, for which the game is named, is a 0. The game is traditionally played at a large oval shaped table with one dealer on each end and a croupier in the center who deals the cards, generally from a shoe. A pair of cards is set on the table face down, being turned over for both the Player and the Banker. A tableaux on the green felt of the table will indicate at what point either of the two, Player or Banker, is allowed to draw a third card.
The claim to fame for Baccarat is its high level of glamour because this is a very high stakes game that is a real favorite of whales, the big money gamblers in any casino. Due to these exceptionally high rolling games, many casinos establish a separate room with extra guards just for Baccarat and the fact is, these casinos can even be cleaned out by one large Baccarat game since the stakes get so amazingly high. Those looking to play a wildly exciting game will choose this one because enormous sums of money are often risked and the payoff is bigger than at any other table in the entire casino, much to the delight of onlooker who often spend hours waiting to see a giant win.
